Programs
Americanism
Our Americanism program includes all activities tending to perpetuate American ideals and to uphold the principles of American democracy. The security of America lies in a citizenry in whose minds and hearts is ingrained a true understanding of, and love for those ideals and principles upon which the nation was founded; a citizenry aware of the duties of citizenship and a willingness to perform those duties even at the cost of great personal sacrifice. Americanism work is largely educational in character and is usually divided into three phases: work with the youth, the adult, and the community. All matters pertaining to the flag or patriotic education are rightly classified as Americanism activities.
Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF)
In 1970, funded by memorial gifts from Units, a loan from Auxiliary funds, and an inheritance to the Auxiliary from a former member, the Auxiliary Emergency Fund was established. This fund provides emergency assistance to a member for a limited period of time. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary who have maintained membership for at least the immediate past two years and who have paid their dues for the current year (three consecutive years of membership) are eligible to apply.
Another kind of emergency has been recognized by the Auxiliary – the emergency a woman faces when she is suddenly single – deserted, divorced, or widowed, with no skills to support herself or her family. It is to give immediate, rather than long-term, assistance.

Children & Youth
The purpose and principles of the American Legion Auxiliary’s Children and Youth Program are in general the same as those of The American Legion. Although the program is derived from mandates of The American Legion, the Auxiliary augments and adds to it through its continuing support of the overall program as well as through the sponsorship of special assignments and activities.
Community Service
Community Service embraces all activities for improvement of conditions of life in the community where the American Legion Auxiliary unit is located. It has been a major activity of The American Legion and Auxiliary since 1926, and has resulted in the completion of a vast number of projects to make American communities better places in which to live. Every Auxiliary Unit is expected to carry out or cooperate in at least one project for community betterment each year.

Education
The education of all of America’s children is essential for the future of our nation. The American Legion Auxiliary joins with The American Legion to aid and support the basic rights of all children to receive an appropriate education. That education should prepare them for a fulfilling life.
Girls State
California Girls State is a leadership program of the American Legion Auxiliary designed to increase awareness and knowledge of governmental processes while learning about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Delegates come away with a greater appreciation of the American Flag and of the sacrifices made by our veterans. While at Girls State, they make friends with outstanding girls from around the state and have a fun week they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

Leadership
Mission education for all American Legion Auxiliary members.
Learning is something that never ends. No matter our age, there is always something new we can learn or teach others. As an organization, it is important for American Legion Auxiliary members to share knowledge with each other to help continue the ALA’s longstanding mission of serving veterans, military, and their families.
National Security
The purpose of the American Legion Auxiliary National Security Committee is to maintain and provide a strong national defense, strengthening our military families, and preparing our population for response to national and manmade disasters.
Poppies
Poppy Day is celebrated in countries around the world. The American Legion brought National Poppy Day® to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day, as National Poppy Day.
Public Relations
Public Relations is simply a matter of establishing and maintaining goodwill. It is telling the general public of the value of the American Legion Auxiliary to the community and the country. Public Relations covers every kind of communication from personal contact in casual conversation, to speakers, and to carefully prepared news releases for the media. Social Media has become an important component of PR. It is not a complicated job, but it is a vitally important one. It is a job for every member of the Auxiliary as well as the Public Relations Committee.
Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation (VA & R)
VA&R means the complete restoration of the veteran and his or her family to normal function and adjustment, physically, mentally, socially, and vocationally for the fullest possible life, compatible with his or her abilities and disabilities.
